Internship at Urban Systems

From September to December 2024, I completed a 12-week internship at Urban Systems as a surveyor assistant in Calgary, Canada. Urban Systems is a consulting and engineering firm that focuses on the development, planning, and realization of sustainable urban and infrastructure projects.

During my internship, I primarily worked on various layout tasks, such as setting out property boundaries, roads, and fences. We also regularly set out grids, which allowed contractors to precisely determine how much soil needed to be excavated or added.

Additionally, I was involved in as-built measurements. I also participated in 'legal surveys', where we had to trace and document various 'property pins' (boundary markers) and ASCM's (geodetic reference points).

To ensure our measurements were accurate and reliable, I also created and placed 'control points' in the ground. These points serve as stable references for further measurement work and are essential in large-scale projects.

During my internship, I mainly worked with a GNSS system and spent a week working with a drone. I also had the opportunity to experiment with the Matterport laser scanner, which was an interesting experience.

My internship at Urban Systems not only provided me with a lot of technical knowledge and practical skills but also helped me grow personally. Working in an international environment improved my communication skills, taught me to work independently, and gave me more insight into planning and structuring complex projects. It was an educational and valuable experience that strengthened both my professional and personal development.
